A Penn Central Freight Rounding Horseshoe Curve -- Bill Howes

1, 2 and 3. A westbound freight with PC GP35 2278, U33B 2899, and U33B 2966 up front taking the curve near Altoona, PA in August 1972.

4 and 5. Looking across the canyon.

6. The helpers were PC SD45 6225 and SD40 6278.

Interesting to me is the fully painted NYC caboose on the Pennsy with fully painted PC power three years (?) after the merger!  I'm sure the light
angle has something to do with the odd color of the caboose.

Perhaps the NYC car lacked coupler stops at that time and could not be pushed. Three of the five diesel units were delivered new to the Penn Central and never carried any PRR or NYC logos.
