Toto Tuesday: Coonskins in Kansas
Author: santafe199

The other day my friend Jim Watson pointed out that I hadn’t posted any of his ‘stuff’ lately, which is true. So I went to digging. I’m finding that I’ve pretty well exhausted the train or action slides I’ve scanned from his collection, leaving me with tons of roster/consist shot scans. Unless they have special interest I usually try to stay away from posting basic, everyday roster shots. For the most part they’re just not very sexy. But you really can’t go wrong with Fallen Flags! So here are 3 images for you fans loyal to the “Coonskin”.

1. SL&SF 729 sits with 2 older paint schemes in Kansas City, KS (probably Rosedale) in July of 1966.
(Ektachrome slide)

2. SL&SF 565 at the modest RH facility in Pittsburg, KS on July 3, 1977.

3. Although the date is post-BN merger, here’s SL&SF 767 still in pure Frisco paint visiting with Uncle Pete in Salina, KS on January 14, 1981.

Thanks for looking back!

Beautiful shots,Lance.
I like the SLSF.Too bad it is gone.
It is a toss up between the red and
white and the black.Nothing really
beats the black torpedo tank units.
I shot them in Waycross Ga.in the
70's.They also ran into Hamlet,NC.
Trains to the SE via Birmingham,Al.
to the UP at North Platte.

Notice that the GP38 has type B trucks.

Uncle Joe
11 miles East of Tampa.

How old? I'm past 77, and that unit STILL looked like a GP35, to me.

Not sure which I like best - the GP35 on Type B's, the torpedo-boat GP35, or the U25B!  Am I seeing a box of some sort around the U-boat's exhaust stack, or is that an object in the background?

I don't think any GP38's were built with type B trucks.

You are correct. Those customers that traded in Alcos, wanted high horsepower units back.
