The third car was a US Army mortuary car (aka Coffin Car) converted from many varieties of old pullman sleeper cars. Various members of this fleet were also medical ward cars (similar to later hospital cars) or ward-dressing cars. They would be used for ferrying wounded or deceased military persons to hospitals or their resting places from the ports.

These cars are identified by regular vestibules at opposite corners and blanked doors at other corners; a baggage type door, usually split hinged doors, close to the end of the car, any window pattern. They were air conditioned or refrigerated however ductwork was internal or used the existing ductwork.

A small number of these found post-army owners or uses. Ft Eustis VA had a number of them made into coaches and one into an observation car (still exists somewhere). One or more went to the USAF for the blue trains.
