Matched set Monday, BN . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   in JUL '95, five 40-2's, spliced by a fuel tender, were leading a fairly new set of empty coal hoppers north for another load near Walker, WY.

Less complicate days: just add another SD40-2. Very nice photo. How long did the fuel tenders last?

It appears from various publications, the first were built in '82 and most retired by '90, so, less than ten years?

I saw 3-4 fuel tenders with sets of SD40-2’s at Powder River in August 1996.

Didn't they end up on helper sets so they could stay out longer between shop visits for fuel?

Yes they were in the pusher sets at Crawford hill for a period of time then after that you would see them in company tank trains hauling fuel from DesMoines. Haven't seen any for while now.

The fuel tenders were a good idea poorly executed.  I seem to remember a post on TO saying the buff forces on the couplers ruined the draft gear housings.

AFIK, fuel tenders supplied all the locomotives in the consist, as each unit was equipped with fuel transfer gear and hoses.  I can be corrected on that.
