Greenbrier 614 on the Thomas Viaduct -- Roger Patelski
Author: MartyBernard

I have posted many of Roger Patelski's photos of 614.  I like these two Thomas Viaduct shots.  Look at all the rail fan photographers on the ground in both shots.  And the lighting is really neat.

This was a Ferry Move Roger rode from Baltimore (first photo) to Silver Spring in the Summer of 1980.  Information on the Thomas Viaduct is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Viaduct

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

Nice photos from Roger.  Thanks Marty for sharing them.  I have been over the Thomas Viaduct many times.  This is the main line of the former Baltimore & Ohio Railroad for anyone who is not familiar and the viaduct crosses over the Patapsco River and the Patapsco State Park just below Relay, Maryland, about 7 miles south of Baltimore.

When I was younger. I walked across this bridge many times.
I never walked close to the edge. Because I didn't know how sturdy
those wrought iron railings were. LOL

Yup!  But I wonder if today’s risk managers would be struck by the irony of a train called the “Safety Express” having all of those heads sticking out into the flying coal cinders.... :-)

Those were great times with a well operated railroad with great management including Mr. William Howes, Jr., V.P. of Casualty Prevention and he did care about safety, a great well maintained steam locomotive with Ross Roland and his staff, and lots of enthusiastic volunteers including a group of musicians who went car to car engaging the passengers to sing-a-long to railroad and pop music.  I only wish that we could do it once again.

What is the main reason the 614 doesn't run anymore? Mechanical issues or just a shortage of good old "Do-Re-Me" ? She was one of my favorites!

If I recall correctly. Those musicians were from the Phillips' Restaurant
when it was still inside Harborplace. They had a regular gig there. I was
probably on that trip. When that photo was taken!

Run it where? Pull what cars? Run it on which railroad?

Well, last year, 765 was pulling a train at 60+ mph open baggage car and open vestibules. It was a great experience, especially because it is extremely rare to have that opportunity now.
