I know that the Milw Olympian Hiawatha went in to Union Station head first, the electrics ran around the train and then drug it backwards to Tacoma. How did the Union Pacific reverse direction on their pool train at Union Station?? Thanks for any info....

Both NP and UP had/has a Y at Argo. Likely there but perhaps someone knows for sure.

In the early days, a switch engine must have dragged the train back to Argo and wyed them. (The Train of Tomorrow equipment set had a round-end dome observation car.) By the late 1960s, UP just ran the power around the train and pulled the train backwards to Portland. In 1969 the consist of the City of Portland without sleepers went through to Seattle and back as #s 457 and 458. After unloading #458 at Portland, they ran the train around the PTR baloon track and added the sleepers for the next aftrnoon's departure of #106.

Okay thanks.....That explains a lot. Did not know the City went through to Seattle as a different train sans sleepers.
