Nostalgia & History > More SP From the Good Old Days.Date: 08/13/19 14:34 More SP From the Good Old Days. Author: tehachcond Here's three more from the Tehachapi territory:
4. This SP eastbound must have been a very heavy one. I caught this one in March 1971, between Bena and Ilmon. Five units on the point... 5. ...and five more cut in helping. 6. One of the first series Krause-Maffei hydraulic units departs Bakersfield on a westbound. The SP puurchased the three from the D&RGW after they gave up on them. Yes, that's a stock car behind the power. There were five more conventional looking stock cars behind the head car. November, 1964. As always, thanks for checking these out, and comments welcome. D&RGW tested theirs and modified the air intakes to help them run better in tunnels. After about 3 years Rio Grande sold their 3 to SP. The photo there must have been soon after SP took owner ship.
