Nostalgia & History > SP Niles Canyon 1962Date: 09/10/19 20:26 SP Niles Canyon 1962 Author: FiveChime I posted this on TO back in 2008 but perhaps some newcomers did not see it.
Eastbound Rock Train in Niles Canyon on the current route of the Niles Canyon Railway. The RS11s were common in the Bay Area when they were new. 5722 was one of four RS 11 demonstrators the SP purchased. Notice the single note Wabco horn. These remained on the ex domo units when they became 2900s and until their end of service in Texas in the 1970s. Don Hansen Photo Regards, Jim Evans Edited 2 time(s). Farwell was the only actual siding "in" the canyon; last siding would have been Niles and the next siding would be Sunol. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/11/19 18:36 by Railbaron. The date, by the way, is July 6, 1959, and the second locomotive, not that you can see it, is 5643. Thanks for posting this, Jim

Thanks for the date clarification. The demonstrators were built in 1956 so they a few years old here. Regards, Jim Evans |
