I posted this on TO back in 2008 but perhaps some newcomers did not see it.

Eastbound Rock Train in Niles Canyon on the current route of the Niles Canyon Railway. The RS11s were common in the Bay Area
when they were new. 5722 was one of four RS 11 demonstrators the SP purchased. Notice the single note Wabco horn. These remained
on the ex domo units when they became 2900s and until their end of service in Texas in the 1970s.

The three ex-demo RS11s were dual control units as I recall.

Saw a lot of these working in San Antonio around 1970, mostly local jobs. The RSD's were also there and I saw at least one big Century during that time.

I'm trying to place the location, MP 33 area?

I'm positive that's Farwell, towards the east end. Farwell was the only actual siding "in" the canyon; last siding would have been Niles and the next siding would be Sunol.

I'm not sure exactly where in Niles Canyon this is.  The siding should give someone a clue.  The date, by the way, is July 6, 1959, and the second locomotive, not that you can see it, is 5643.  Thanks for posting this, Jim

Farwell is the only siding in Niles Canyon. Between Brightside and Farwell.

Thanks for the date clarification. The demonstrators were built in 1956 so they a few years old here.
