Cajon Pass pics early 1976
Author: GreenFlag

Some photos taken on several different weekend trips up to Cajon Pass in early 1976.
First one catching the Super C with Bicentennial 5703 on the point and snow capped Mt Baldy behind at Summit on 2-13-76.
Second photo of the 6943 west early on a gloomy morning at Cajon with the 6915, 752 & 741 behind on 1-24-76.
Third one of the 8780 east at Sullivan's Curve before it was realigned. The 5916 & 4636 trail. Taken on 1-31-76

First photo of FP45 5941 at Sullivan's Curve taken on 4-16-76.
Second the 5527 west at Summit with the 5914 & 5573 trailing on 3-6-76. Must've been a wet winter that year.
Third of the SP 6904 at Highland on 1-24-76.

Three more. First one of a UP van train with the 6907 leading at Sullivan's Curve and the 6940 & 6901 behind on 1-24-76.
Second of the UP 3238 east at Blue Cut with the 84B, 434B, 414 and the 79 on 3-6-76. I wonder if any of those pine trees are still up there on the hill behind after all of the fires since these were taken? I think that house has survived all of the many fires that have ocurred in this area since then.
Last one of SF 5648 east at Summit on a clear day with the 8737 & 8775 on 2-13-76.
Some good times back then at Cajon

Nice pics from a bygone time of locations that are now, sadly, off limits or gone.

Note the unique nose logo on pic #4.

Great photos, brings back memories of my mid-70s Cajon trips in my teen years. Especially that one of the UP DD coming through the gloom.

Astounding UP consist in photo No. 8 !!  Really excellent photo set; thanks for posting.
Once again, I see that the ATSF in pinstripes is still the best looking scheme ever.

Can't recall ever seeing an FP45 in freight paint with the Gyralite actually lit up, either.  They mostly kept the light package until rebuilt in the late 70's and early 80's, but every photo I've seen of an FP45 in freight paint had the Gyralite extinguished.  Can't recall ever seeing a photo of a U28CG or U30CG in freight paint with the Gyralight lit either.

Great series of shots! You really nailed the impressiveness of Cajon! I got there a year later. Great time to work the pass.

I believe the 2016 fire got everything in this shot, including the house.  I don't remember it from my visit earlier this year.

Nice set of photos, thanks for posting.

Thanks for the comments and replies. I've got a lot more as used to go up there a lot around that time, lots of B & W negtives to go through too.
Too bad about the fires, there's been so many in Cajon Pass the last 20 years or so.
I used to go to Fullerton around that time and recall seeing a westbound one night with an oscillating headlight. At first I thought it was an inbound "San Diegan" with an SDP40F, but it was a freight with an FP45 on the point with the light on top on, maybe only time I saw that at night, neat memory.

Cool pig trains and you can actually make out some of the trailers.
