Fantastic! What is it about Carbon Black cars? They are unique among covered hopper cars..
Thank you for sharing.

Cabron black is used used in making rubber hoses and belts. It is used for making tires. Working in a carbon plant was quite dirty at one-time Alot of improvements have been making things
cleaner.

Into the 1960's many carbon  black plants still exhausted mountains of carbon.  The country-side would have a black haze on it for miles around the plant with the worst part being the direction the wind mostly blew.  There was one in Borger Tex.  A golf course was about a 1/4 mile away.  Even thought the grass was actually green it looked and was very sooty.  In fact when a ball hit the fairway it threw up carbon until it stopped rolling.  It looked a lot like smoke coming from the ground.

When operating the plants could be seen from many miles away with the smoke rising high looking like all of hell was on fire.

Changes in the way carbon is produced stopped the smoky problem .
