"Still Tuscan"
Author: overniteman

Sitting in the back of Penn Central's Altoona Works and waiting it's turn through the shop, ex-Pennsy EMD E8A 4283 still wears it's Tuscan Red paint.
It's coupled up to a pair of ALCo S-2's
The 4283's famed PRR Keystones may have faded away, but don't despair, the E8 will eventually see service on Amtrak.

Altoona, Pennsylvania.
March, 1974.

I doubt it would have gone to work for Amtrak at that late date ... but it might have donated its engine/generator sets to a couple of DeWitt Geeps (RS3m's).

You could be incorrect about going to Amtrak.  Some of the locomotives that Amtrak acquired when they began service were in poor shape and Amtrak continued to look for others before they were able to purchase any new ones, so it is very possible that this E unit could have been reconditioned and sent to Amtrak.

PC E8A 4283 shows up as Amtrak 291 on the all-time Amtrak Roster  at http://www.textfiles.com/fun/amtrak1.txt
This unit was apparently renumbered to Amtrak 403 per http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/LocoPicture.aspx?id=68788
