Four big Conrail Alcos
Author: EL833

An ore train sits outlawed on the westward siding in Hudson, Ohio in November 1977, a common occurence in those days. Alco C628 #6749 leads 3 C636's, all former Penn Central.

Didn't the Alcos end up assigned to Mingo Junction? I remember seeing a lot of them in the mid/late 70's when I was working around Wheeling.

Yes, Both 4 and 6 axle Centuries. Maintenance base back then was Conway and eventually moved to DeWitt Ny in the Syracuse area. Ben

Most of the 6 axles were but Collinwood in Cleveland did a lot of repair and servicing as well. Four axle Alco assignments were at several facilities depending on model type. C425s and RS27s at Conway, C424s at Brier Hill, RS32s at DeWitt, etc. The big six axles, at least the few that remained at the end, did get moved from Conway to run on the Messena line.

Thanks for the info. I've got slides taken back then, and there was a one and only trip to Conway. ALCOs were of some interest, but not a super high priority.
