A few Burlington Northern from 24 years ago...
Author: rrartist

Almost a quarter of a century ago, 1995 to be exact the Burlington Northern was major player in the La Crosse WI area. The motive power was nothing short of outstanding as depicted with the BN 1402 leading a Dog's Breakfast into town or the BN 2100 and it's experimental paint scheme and lastly the BN 1821 sunning itself near the yard office.

It seems only yesterday when the GP50s were the "speedsters" of the Northern Lines as shown with the BN 3148 motoring towards Chicago on the southside of La Crosse. I remember my excitement when I photographed coal power, BN 5121 on an intermodal train or a recent rebuild as the BN 2975 leading a westbound freight past my home.

I guess looking back, the only standard on the Burlington Northern 23 years ago was the Cascade Green paint! BN 6191 poses nicely near the Yard Office while a rather clean BN / SOO consist hustles a westbound and the truly unique BN 6368 leads train #4 (now Z SSECHC) onward towards Chicago. Ahhh memories all!

Good catches. BN 5121 with the red numberboards with white lettering is certainly different.

The photo of BN 2100 looks like a unique striping arrangement. Does it really have black painted stripes on top of the nose? Thanks for sharing these.

It like the shop ran out of green paint and used black instead.

I think 2100 was pre-white face exception. Maybe a test. The red numberboards indicating that a Texico lube product was being used.  There were also yellow numberboards for Shell product test units.  As I recall.  NIce pix from what seems a long time ago.

Thanks for posting, Jim.  The first shot shows the ongoing dilemma of the BN, not enough power for thier trains.  Every nce and awhile ou'd catch
a "dog's breakfast" consist on a manifest and often, rebuilt GP30/35's and GP38's on Expediters.

2100 Really stands out.  Too bad this was not adopted as far as grade crossing visibility goes!
