Looks more like westbound leaving Sunol and entering Niles Canyon.

Regardless of location, excellent photo.

That's Huff and Puff. They were assigned to Commute service and still had operating steam generators.

I agree.  Know that area well.  Grew up there.

Would Huff and Puff be numbers 4451 and 4452?

Great image. SP SD9's looked so much better with plows...

Great photo of the red and scarlet SP in action.  What a pleasant setting.  The two units would soon be using dynamics to descent the mild grade between Sunol and Niles Junction.  The track remains in service as part of the Niles Canyon Railway.

What a fantastic photo---if you have any others of SP action in the Sunol-Pleasanton-Livermore-Altamont area, please post!  I only saw this line briefly as a kid, and only saw a train on it once (SD-45's pulling a manifest--and they were moving pretty fast!), so I love any old photos I can see of this original transcontinental line in action.

If you looka t the rail, SP was using long lengths of bolted rail on this line at the time.  Stick rail that kinda seemed like welded rail...
