Nostalgia & History > Lot of railroad in a state with a city named after another state?Date: 12/01/19 08:47 Lot of railroad in a state with a city named after another state? Author: Roadjob On my way to Chicago in 1976, I hit a lot of spots along the way including my beloved Sterling Ohio and RU tower, just recently defiled by Conrail and bereft of anything EL. I hit Willard Ohio and Elkhart Indiana, but this time decided to go see the CSS&SB known simply as the South Shore. I got to the shop area in Michigan City Indiana on a Sunday when there was very little activity. Rumors were confirmed because two of the road's Little Joe's were on the property, off for the day, but looking in pristine shape. I walked around the whole place, soundly convinced I was the only human present. I drove into town to see the street front trackage and lucked out by getting a brace of four geeps and a caboose heading west out of town. I strolled around the whole area, which was actually very charming, and caught one Chicago bound commuter train. I was there long enough to see those four geeps return with a coal train. All in all, it was an extremely profitable couple of hours, as these photos will bear witness to. But Chicago was calling, and the seismic changes to the east of the windy city needed a documentation update in the big town.
