D&H on their old Penn Division
Author: thebluecomet

Some various trains along the original D&H down to Scranton.

1.  U23B 2304 climbing the grade at Forest City, PA on train AM-2.  October 29, 1978.

2. At the north end of the siding at Uniondale, PA.

3. The bucolic small town station at Thompson, PA.  July 1976.

4.  Some activity from July 27, 1975.  A helper set with several N&W U30B's and one D&H RS-11 pass under the iconic former Erie Starucca Viaduct at Lanesboro, PA.

5. A short time later a northbound with more N&W units

6. They meet a southbound with several Penn Central units on the point. Hmmm, not quite what I was hoping for.

7.  The southbound gets underway at Lanesboro.

8. A few miles down the road as I pace the pusher set working hard.

9. For whatever reason I climbed up a very steep hill to reach trackside at this bridge.  Not a bad angle considering. Again all July 27, 1975.

10.  Back to the earlier train from October 1978.

11. At the north end of the siding at Lanesboro, the train waits for a track inspection car.

12. Tried the telephoto lens while waiting.

13.  Finally underway and passing the former station at New Windsor, NY.

14. Going away image.  Other than a few miles in the Scranton-Carbondale area the entire line was abandoned after the D&H aquired the former Lackawanna main between Binghamton, NY and Scranton.

15.  Just threw this one in here for lack of anywhere else to put it.  Parked by the crew office at Taylor Yard in Scranton is this old school bus painted in full D&H gray and yellow. July 1983.

What is it like now adays at Starucca Viaduct.  Is there any traffic over or under the viaduct these days.  I cant belive I never made it there and had so many oportunities in the late 70's early 80's to do so.

The D&H under is abandoned.  The Susquehanna runs on the old Erie over the viaduct but only at night.  SU-99 goes west three days a week and SU-100 heads east the other three with Sunday(?) off. During the longest days of the year, late June, you may catch the eastbound in the evening light.

6 trains a week over the top - no tracks underneath.

Thanks for posting!  My age is such that I barely remember the Penn Division - but these sure brought back memories.

I believe that the name of the town is Windsor, as opposed to New Windsor.
