The "Plug" in July 1978 (GM&O)
Author: EL833

Long after Amtrak had pretty much homoginized everything out of Union Station in Chicago, there was still a nice variety on the commuter side of things. Between the BN, N&W, and Conrail there was a fair amount of interesting trains, but my personal favorite was always the "Plug", the former Gulf,Mobil &Ohio Joliet train. Shown here about 2 minutes into it's journey in July of 1978, it was a nice taste of what the GM&O looked like in pre Amtrak times.

Very nice photo with Chicago skyline in the background.
The end was near, however for this operation.
During 1979 ICG Paducah had rebuilt GM&O #883A into MBTA #1153.
Thanks for the photo posting.

Thanks for posting your photo of the Plug. OI remember that train so much during my youth and after returning back home after college.

Great shot of the "Plug".
I always enjoyed seeing this train - even got to ride it one time.

Something I wish I could have done. To catch this required a day off work and a near 7 hour drive, so the photo got the nod before a ride. Should have taken an extra day off work lol.
