Nostalgia & History > Meet Monday . . .Date: 12/02/19 07:14 Meet Monday . . . Author: 3rdswitch . . . even though this shot taken on the BNSF Harbor Sub is not THAT old, AUG '98, it cannot and will never be repeated. In APR2002, the Alameda Corridor began operations between downtown Los Angeles and the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles shutting down BNSF's Harbor Sub from through operations creating two stub end Harbor Sub's with the section from MP 7 to MP 14 taken out of service. Today the sub is only in service to MP 2 on the east end and MP 14 to MP 28 on the west end. The old line in between is completely gone with new construction of Metro commuter rail in between. In the above shot the short "coil train", which periodically ran between the port of Los Angeles and the California Steel Industries plant in Fontana, has shoved into the east end of LAIRPORT siding to meet a westbound Barstow to Watson manifest. This siding was almost never used but when you are working one of the higher paying jobs in LA you do what you have to to get over the road as quickly as possible. Thousands of trains, including stack trains, have passed this location on this segment of ground level right of way located at the east end of LAX's two original run ways, but for reasons unknown to me, in it's later days of use, even empty well cars were not allowed to be stored here do to some kind of interferance with airport operations? Today this section of the new commuter rail is being built under ground at this location greatly increasing the cost of construction?
