Couple shots. Still fiddiling with it. Can't seem to make up for the fan shake in the projector.
BN west at St Regis. Still can't get that to sharpen up. Slide a lot sharper.
MRL west of Dixon.

100mm fixed lens on a crop body DSLR.

Is it a macro lens?  A non-macro lens may not have the focusing power to get that close.  Are you pointing the camera into the projector?

Cheaper to buy a scanner than to buy another lense ....

Yes, it's a macro straight into the lens. Lens was $60. What's a scanner going for these days?

No, it's the Milwaukee main to the PNW at St Regis over the NP.

Ok, think I fixed a few things changing to another projector. However, it has a dirty piece of glass I need to tend to. But. Here are some better tries with less projector shake.

Lastly Springfield Terminal 621 617 1711 on the Hudson River Mechanicsville NY. Aug27-1988 Marc Grinter.
This was a tray of purchased slides I grabbed for testing. Various exposures.
Seems to be a quick way to put pics on TO.
Not too sure how they got away with mounting the camera to the same board the projector was mounted to in the Railfan article. Vibration seems to be a problem. Unless you run ISO up to help.
These were shot between 100-250 shutter speed and F8. ISO 400.

A while back I ran across this setup. It looks really similar to what you're doing except that the lens appears to be place right against the projector.

These are great images with a lot of detail information in them.
Bite the bullet and get a flatbed scanner, you'll be flabergasted at the difference.
You'll be able to scan at very high resolution, be able to control your tonal levels, contrast and color balance and save them in any format(s) you want.
For images of this quality, it'll be worth it.

I think the Arkansas & Missouri is at Winslow, Arkansas.  I remember shooting one there.
As for the scanning, its hard to judge without seeing the originals.  Two suggestions....(1) Send a couple of slides to a friend that has a good slide scanner and see what results are.  (2) Buy something like an Epson scanner (I have the V700) or a Nikon dedicated slide scanner on recommendation of others. (2a) send a few to a professional place and see how they look.  Then whichever way satisfys you go with that!

Interesting the first few photo's almost seem to have a 3D effect - giving a sense of being there.

I keep a pile of old Trains magazines that I periodically start reading through.  As it turns out, I recently read an article about using a DSLR and a slide projector written by an archivist at the Center for Railroad Photography & Art.  The answer was simple. 

Set the shutter speed to 1/500th.  As I recall, that still allowed for noise-free images with the ISO speed set to 400.  I'm considering making such a setup myself.

I agree completely! Just be sure to get one with slide and film capability.
You will find it much easier and produce superior quality to what you are getting now!

To put it bluntly the sharpness and color is not there. A reasonable scanner (not one of those $99 slide scanners) will achieve much better clarity, sharpness and color. Epson V600 can be had for around $200.
