When I moved to Waterloo around 1980, the 9600's were the premier mainline power, augmented by a lot of Paducah rebuilds.  Evenutally, the ex-GM&O 9500's
started showing up, plus the big six axle, SD40 variants, power for the coal trains.  When I left the Waterloo area in 1985, the "slate grey" scheme was in vogue
although you didn't see it that often.  The black scheme would come back much later and I have to say it looks really good here.  Thanks for posting.
