Chicago trip July 1983 - ICG downtown
Author: RRTom

Chicago, IL  July 6, 1983.
First time there at 15 years old on a family trip from out of state.  Not interested in shopping or sightseeing.  Only want to see trains.  I can go wherever I want as long as I meet my parents and siblings at a certain time at the hotel later that day to get ready for dinner.  I have my paper AAA map of Chicago which I used to plan my trip.

1 - ICG Highliners waiting for the afternoon rush.
2 - Yard tracks in this area were full of stored ICG boxcars.
3 - ICG transfer with this switch engine pulling south past the yards.

I also got myself to Santa Fe's Corwith Yard and the passenger train stations.  My prints are all fading badly but I'll see if there's anything worth sharing.

4 - Another view of the freight.  I didn't get a shot of the lead switcher as it was parked under a bridge (18th St. per KevinK).
5 - Another view of the Highliner yard.  Some cars had RTA logos, others still said ICG.

Thanks for sharing. Your first five photos are at 18th Street and your last two appear to be around Monroe Street.

Thanks for the map and location info.  I admit these aren't the best quality photos but I am limiting the photos to subjects that I think would be interesting nevertheless.  The original photos are fading badly.  I'm also getting my feet wet with a scanner that is rather old.

Thanks for posting those, I'm always fascinated by the look of the area before it was filled with high rise condos. Here's a recent drone view showing how much trackage is gone. It is looking south at the curving of the Chicago Sub/St. Charles Air Line that is to the left in several of the posted photos. As of fall 2019, that is no longer two tracks past the new Kelley interlocking that was created and is shown in the photo. More info is in this thread:

Is that car in picture 6 on the ground?

No, that's the same train as in picture 7.  Just on the lower level trackage.
