Chicago trip July 1983 pt. 2- Union & North Western Stations
Author: RRTom

Chicago July 6, 1983
1 - BN E's behind the locomotive shop south of Union Station
2 - BN commuter backing into the station, looking south toward Harrison St. Tower before this area was built over.  Little did I know that I would be working here in about 10 years rebuilding all of this track.
3 - Amtrak heading into the station, Harrison St. Tower in the background.  I think this was the end of it's run as I don't recall seeing it coming over from the yard.  They did not waste the passengers' time backing in the LD trains in 1983.

4 - Moving to the north side of CUS, some MILW commuter trains with F40Cs in North West Suburban Mass Transit District paint.  #41 shown here.
5 - F40C #44
6 - F40C #41

7 - North side of CUS: Gallery car lettered for the Milwaukee Road
8 - Now at North Western Station...RTA F40s dominate the evening rush.  By this time, most ex-C&NW gallery cars have been repainted to RTA colors, but there are still a few trains with solid C&NW painted cars.  Love the signals.
9 - RTA F40s

Note the different fonts in the engine numbers:
10 - RTA 519
11 - RTA 511
12 - Afternoon rush hour trains waiting to depart

You certainly got good coverage of commuter trains at the depots.

Thanks.  Do you know if #511 is an F7 or an E-unit?

It's an E9 still running as UP 949.

What became of the Milwaukee Road bi-levels?

Nice series of photos - thanks for posting them and the others.
