Here's where one of the Grande F's went ...
Author: valmont

Back on Jan. 10 I posted pics of D&RGW's Burnham shop area in Denver, including a bunch of stored F units. The future of those F units was also mentioned. Don't know if this one was in that group but here's where one of the Grande's F's went.

Phil Faudi took this shot at Anchorage, AK on Sept. 18, 1971. Not a lot of 'patching' here! #1522 was x-D&RGW #5744 and was acquired in 1970 and traded to EMD for GP40-2's.

Joseph Strapac's Rio Grande Diesels, Vol 1, does discuss the disposition of some of the D&RGW F units as going to Alaska RR.  There was one that went to the upper mid-west as well, and later to a short line.  Might still be in existance somewhere.

Here's where another one went .... took this shot at Rocky Ford CO on June 30, 1973. Here's a little more history on it's travels:
D&RGW #5644 was sold to American Crystal Sugar Co., Rocky Ford, Colo, 27 August 1969, numbered 64; sold to Glen Monhart in 1980; painted as Chicago, Madison & Northern 564; repainted as Charleston & Western 901, stored on Wisconsin & Calumet.

Think the ELS has that sugar engine now? Have a set of matching paint Fs and I think it's one of them. This is the outfit that has the sharks.

And that Sugar Sprite unit had that god awful switchman's deck welded to the right front of the plow.

As a note, the 901 was painted in the WICT's Illinois Central inspired orange and brown.
