Interesting, as I was aware of telephone area codes available almost fifteen years earlier. Date: 01/15/20 09:08 Re: KCS caboose and billboard Author: MILW16 The billboard looks like a re-creation from the 40s or 50s - look at the sign style and the truck portrayed in the scene. Certainly not up-to-date for the 70s. Of course the locomotive in what appears to be a ghost image in 1960s at least. Neat photo.

Louisiana originally had one area code, 504, when the numbering system was established in 1947. Ten years later in 1957 Louisiana had experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code 504 was split in 1957 to form area code 318. It was forty-one years later in 1998 before the demand for new numbers in Louisiana required a second split of area code 504 to form area code 225. Area code 504 was split one additional time in 2000 to form area code 985. In all area code 504 was split three times. Thanks for the interesting and unusual photo post. ALLEN Date: 01/16/20 07:43 Re: KCS caboose and billboard Author: BarstowRiff KCS only runs one road train a day (SHCS/CSSH) in to New Orleans and that train gos to CSX Gentilly yard with an NOPB crew which gets on at Frellsen Junction out by the airport. The only train out of KCS West yard is a five day a week Baton Rouge turn. KCS operations and yard odffice have been moved out to Reserve, LA, 30 miles up river from NO.

Before the telephone area codes started to grow and split you did not need to dial your area code to call a phone number in your area. You only had to dial 1 followed by the other area code you wanted and then the phone number. So I guess if you were looking at that sign you would just call the number as shown. If you were out of sight of the sign you would then need to consult a phone book or call information. Remember them? Railroads aren't the only business that has changed dramatically, for better or worse, over the years. Go |
