Nostalgia & History > Maroon Monday: another Anscochrome rescue

The subject matter here makes for a great Maroon Monday. The good ol’ Rock Island was covered very well the father & son “Team Gibson”! But the larger story here is the miracles available through home photo-editing. I may be beating a dead horse, so to speak. But I don’t think I’ll ever take for granted the wonders that can be performed on a home PC. Just think of the results if I actually knew what I was doing…

1. CRI&P 626 on train #509 at Calhoun Bluffs NE of Topeka, KS in the early summer(?) of 1955. Basic Anscochrome slide scan, resized only.

Nice shots!! Old Rock Islsnd Lines Herrington, KS based passenger train and engine crews worked to and from Kansas City, MO.

The photo background is interesting too. One large mobile home is being pulled by a small pickup truck. The truck must have been working hard to move all that weight.

And the paint scheme on the trailer is almost a match for RI.

Superb Gibson photo with great editing results.  Thank you Lance.

It appears the baggage car is a former Pullman or Coach (?) detected as a baggage car with a vestibule.

To me they look like one of the original Rocket consists.  As I recall, all of those trainsets had skirting.

Just got off the phone with Art: Those "skirted" cars are actually one articulated car. Art had to dig deep in the ol' memory banks and he thought it was a combination dinette/baggage up front with a regular coach behind. He also said it was original equipment for the Texas Rocket, which was later cut back to being the Oklahoma Rocket. And Art wasn't sure exactly when the cutback occured...

That is amazing. Might an a,most illiterate computer nerd ask what editing program you used to
perform the rescue ? I have many, many slides taken over the years that were left too long in
inappropriate storage with the resultant dust such as your original sports. I would like to clean
at least some of them closer to being acceptable than they are now. I have thought that they
might be quality lost for all time.
