Nostalgia & History > Rio Grande PA 1947!Date: 01/26/20 10:19 Rio Grande PA 1947! Author: santafe199 Here’s Rio Grande/Alco gem from the late Mr Emil Albrecht’s intrepid camera. This Kodachrome image is 72+ years old! I’m still scanning through the latest group of Emil’s slides, now in the Jim Watson collection. But this is an image from an earlier scanning session that I though I would toss up here for y’all. There is a man with a blue hard hat in the doorway of the engine compartment. With this PA fouling another track one can assume it’s in transit in the roundhouse area. Can anyone explain the vantage point Emil is shooting from?
1. D&RGW 600A in Salt Lake City, UT on October 5, 1947. Original Kodachrome slide by Emil Albrecht, from the James W. Watson collection. Thanks for looking back! Oops, that interpretation never occurred to me. I guess my 'intiguing' title needed a little bit of polish... :^/ Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/26/20 12:10 by santafe199. It didn't last for long... Date: 01/26/20 13:01 Re: Rio Grande PA 1947! Author: SvenMolson The vantage point was from the door of an early version of a twin rotar helicopter known as the "flying banana."
That's the only thing I can think of.. Sven Date: 01/26/20 13:06 Re: Rio Grande PA 1947! Author: RuleG santafe199 Wrote:

Thank you for sharing that wonderful image. Date: 01/26/20 15:16 Re: Rio Grande PA 1947! Author: Copy19 Stunning.
JB - Omaha Date: 01/26/20 22:20 Re: Rio Grande PA 1947! Author: balryan The shot is off the 4th S. bridge which is south of the round house. Emil used that shot quite a lot.

Thanks, Ryan! I see they’re still trying to place the shot in Denver. Makes me wonder why I even bother to write up date & location captions. Emboldened, no less... And to RWJ: Thanks! But the original slide is extremely dark, not to mention over 70 years old. I worked quite a while trying to lighten the image up. But no matter what I did, it always ended up looking washed out. That slide is back in Jim’s possession. If I can remember, maybe I can get it back and take another whack at scanning it... Posted from iPhone Date: 01/27/20 10:12 Re: Rio Grande PA 1947! Author: CA_Sou_MA_Agent Did those units go to another road after Rio Grande got rid of them? They didn't seem to last very long on the Grande.
Date: 01/27/20 10:56 Re: Rio Grande PA 1947! Author: dan A units lasted till 1968, when the Yampa valley train died, b units were converted to steam genies lasted till 1990's
