Nostalgia & History > The Advantage of Having a Back PorchDate: 02/04/20 20:24 The Advantage of Having a Back Porch Author: MartyBernard On October 8, 1972 Bill Howes' car "Black Hawk" had the rear of the second section of Western Maryland Rwy's Haggerstown, MD to Elkins, WV 10-car Special. Here are three photos Bill took from the back platform.
1. "Black Hawk" 2. Here the Special was sourthbound along the Western Maryland Rwy's Elkins Line, Thomas Subdivision in Fall Colors. Yes, Bill took this from his back porch. 3. This is Little Falls on North Fork on Blackwater River at MP 79 near Douglas, WV. 4. More Fall Colors along the Western Maryland Rwy's Thomas Subdivision. Thanks Bill, Marty Bernard Edited 1 time(s). That line going down to Elkins, West Virginia was a very rugged line but also so beautiful. I made this trip several times over the former Western Maryland Railway. It's a shame that this line was flooded then torn up by the Chessie System as it was very scenic indeed.

Great scenic trip with fantastic fall scenery. Enjoyed every single moment. Rode the trip back in open vestible door after dark and moving fast. Caught a really bad cold but it was worth it.
