Nostalgia & History > Southern Railway coach yard in AtlantaDate: 02/12/20 11:06 Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: gcm May 78
A few at the coach yard in Atlanta (North Avenue Coach Yard ?). (1) The 610 was being prepared for an excursion the next day and just happened to be sitting at the entrance to the coach yard (tracks to the right). (2-3) A group of us talked to some Southern employees and gained permission to wander around the yard. Unfortunately it was high sun time of day so the pictures are iffy but at least you can get an idea what the yard looked like. At this time cars used on the Southern Crescent and excursion trains were maintained here. After Amtrak took over the SC, Southern closed this yard and maintained the excursion cars at another location - correct me if I am wrong on that info. Date: 02/12/20 11:07 Re: Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: gcm (4-5) This green heavyweight car was labeled as a safety car #22 - don't have any history on it.
(6) Rappahannock River was a 10-6 sleeper built by Pullman-Standard 1949. Date: 02/12/20 11:08 Re: Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: gcm (7) The "other" dome owned by the Southern that was not seen very often was 1613 - a coach dome built by P-S in 1958 for the Wabash. This dome was used when the main one - dome-parlor 1602 was in the shop.
(8) To the right, 953 was a coach-bar-lounge built by Budd in 1949. (9) Another coach-bar-lounge 951 was in the yard. Date: 02/12/20 11:09 Re: Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: refarkas "Iffy" is far better than nothing. As for the content, good coverage. 610 is a great surprise.
Bob Date: 02/12/20 11:09 Re: Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: gcm (10-12) One of the more interesting pieces of equipment in the yard were these four FTB units that had been converted to steam generator cars.
A better picture of one is 960602 in Birmingham -- Sept 75 (posted before). krm152 (Allen) had some excellent info on these units -- https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4382684,4382684#msg-4382684 Edited 2 time(s). (14-15) Also in the yard was this 0-6-0 steam engine 97. This oil burner was built by Porter in 1943 for the Army Corps of Engineers as 5050. It was later used by the Georgia Power Company. Later it was at (I assume still is ?) the Southeastern Railway Museum. Gary Date: 02/12/20 11:43 Re: Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: Jimbo gcm Wrote:

Wasn't the 1613 coach dome regularly used on the Asheville Special from Asheville to Salisbury, NC? Seems like it was. The coach-bar-lounge cars were used on the Piedmont for food service, IIRC. Nice to see all those passenger cars. Thanks for posting. Date: 02/12/20 14:13 Re: Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: Topfuel Another great post by gcm. A very rare view behind the scenes in a coach yard, but this being the 1970's era SOU coach yard in Atlanta, these are particularly rare.

Looks like you thoroughly document equipment at the coach yard. Have seen very few photos from this facility so your are rare. One photo I especially like is that you caught all the Steam Generator cars. Thanks for posting this excellent photo series. They were scheduled to go into the program, but either money ran out, or it was determined that Amtrak had enough Heritage Fleet rebuilds by the 1984 time frame. So, they ended up going to VIA Rail Canada where they were gutted to just shells and rebuilt to coaches. Date: 02/12/20 16:51 Re: Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: RayH I stumbled upon those FT-B units in 1976, the day before the 2 day 4449 excursion from Atlanta to Alexandria. Might have been the same facility. I do remember sitting near what was probably a main line (there was a good sized (for 1976) Coca Cola office builsing nearby), seeing plenty of SOU freights go by all day. Mix in some L&N, SCL and Georgia RR units too.
Date: 02/12/20 16:51 Re: Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: ctillnc The coach yard site has been completely redeveloped. Aside from three unused bridges over North Ave NW, you'd never know it was there. Yes, the Coca-Cola corporate HQ (and Georgia Tech) were on the other side of the main line.
Hayne shops in Spartanburg, SC maintained the passenger cars after the Atlanta coach yard closed. Excursion trains out of Atlanta were made up at Armour Yard for a while, eventually Inman. The 950-series coach-lounge cars were my favorite. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 02/12/20 16:53 by ctillnc. Also was this the same passenger yard SR used before Terminal Station closed?

Leaving the station southbound, bear left at Howell Tower (1.6 miles south). Go south on the Georgia Division toward downtown 1.3 miles. Coach yard on west side of tracks at 33.768568, -84.400178. > the same passenger yard SR used before Terminal Station closed? Yes, the coach yard had been there for many decades. There was minor car maintenance, cleaning, and restocking at Terminal Station but all the heavy work was done at the coach yard. And up until around 1948 (not sure about the exact date), Southern Railway had a roundhouse and turntable there to service passenger steam locomotives. Date: 02/14/20 01:42 Re: Southern Railway coach yard in Atlanta Author: mp51w Oh! To have been able to wonder that coach yard! I particularly like your shot with the staggered sleeper, dome, & coach lounge!
That must have been some very valuable real estate! |
