SP Train 803 in 1962
Author: photobob

I took this on a trip to Southern California on a road trip with some of my fellow photo students from SF City College back in 1962. I know we chased it up Solidad Canyon but I have no idea of this location. Train 803 was lead by four Alco DL-702/RSD 12's and an SD9.

It looks like the old grade crossing on the old Soledad Canyon Toad from where the trucker tried to put Dennis Weaver into the train in the movie Duel.

Acton maybe? Would that be the present day Crown Valley Rd. crossing in the distance?

Back when SP was hoping the RSD-12's were going to be a winner.

Whoever put up the numbers was pretty sloppy.  Looks like both the 8 and the 3 are upside down.  I always took the time to put up the numbers correctly.  You never knew when someone might be taking a photo for posterity.

You must have been quite the salesman to convince your fellow students to chase a freight train when there were so many other things to photograph in this world!

Sun is wrong for a westbound train in Soledad Canyon (westbound by SP timetable, that is.  Such a train would be going easterly through Soledad Canyon by geographical direction).

Ye, it's running hours late on 803's schedule,
and running close to compass-north. No reason
to doubt his Acton location.
