AMTK leaving Borie with a Fast Forty
Author: valmont

Back when Amtrak had a stop at bustling Borie WY I got this westbound leaving this windswept location with a UP SD40-2H 'Fast Forty' on the point. Used to see these models commonly spliced between a pair of DDA40X's as in pic 2.

1. wb @ Borie on July 26, 1980
2. heading west  out of Cheyenne on Feb. 6, 1977

An excellent source for Fast Forty diesels is found at https://utahrails.net/articles/up-fast-forties.php
Union Pacific "Fast Forties" High Speed SD40-2s by Don Strack (... an updated and expanded version of an article published in Diesel Era, Volume 9, Number 1, January-February 1998)

Nice photos. I hired out in train service in 1976 on the 5th district (Cheyenne - Rawlins) and then in 1977 was accepted into engine service on the 4th District (Cheyenne - North Platte). Got to see and operate many of these units.
