5.  In an earlier era, looking east along the Milw main line at Washington, IA.

6.  Trying my hand at a color negative; not easy, I'm going to have to find some help instructions.  This is a work train during the era when Milw was getting the Rock Island line to Muscatine rebuilt.  The guys are laying ties on what will be the connection from the Milw to the RI to go east.

Here a scans of my old track charts for this area when I was Division Engineer (or various fancy titles that meant DE) from 1987-94 for that part of the Soo Line. My track charts had a lot of white out in them but were usually the most accurate ones available. Whenever there was a special hirail trip they always asked for a copy of my charts. 

First page shows the old Rock Island alignment which became the Milwaukee (then Soo) main into Washington

Second page shows the old Milwaukee alignment going west from there

If my info is right, the old Rock Island track was rebuilt in 1982/83

That's cool!  I didn't realize the hill was so steep going west from the creek bridge west of town.  Would be nice to get a heavy westbound pulling out there sometime.

Thanks!  But I didn't show you the previous 6 attempts, which definitely don't look as good.  When I bought all those negatives I didn't know what I'd ever do with them, so it's nice to be able to share them finally.

Milwaukee bought their SW-1's for the purpose of tiptoeing along the petite rails of their former narrow gauge lines in Southern Minnesota and Iowa.  None of ;em weighed over 203,000 lbs.
