UP whirlybird in WP land?

Nope, just at home in North Platte ... but as usual back then sometimes Armour yellow was eclipsed there. Ironically I took this shot on April Fools Day in 1972.

How did it get the name whirlybird?  Was it the sound it made?

if you look through the radiator opening toward the rear of locos you'll see the mechanism that spawned the nickname ... took this shot on same day as pic 1

Looks more like Stockton! What an intersting mix of power. The U50s were magnificent machines to see at full gallop! Only got to see them once around Kansas City. Nice catch on this one Val!!

I guess they figured that if WP's track could handle their very heavy U30B's it should be able to handle a U50.

Its not on WP property, Its WP engines on UP. This explains all the UP power on the WP in the early 80s, it UP paying back borrowed power. lol

I didn't think the U50's were still running in the 80's.

Im sorry, you didnt get my humor. The photo was early 70s. My joke falls into all the jokes that in the 80s, UP didnt have to absorb the WP, just change signs since it was already flooded with UP power.
