(1) A Santa Fe GP9U and GP7 head south through Cameron,Tx on the Southern Division.
Ex-Missouri Pacific 5 double bedroom buffet lounge Eagle Cliff (P-S 1948) had been under restoration in this small town for a couple years by the late Bert Dockall and company.
It was just about finished.

(2-3) Around Houston there were a number of areas with streetcar remnants. Mainly on brick roads that had survived like this one.
A double track line that went to the SP Grand Central Station.
The station (torn down in 1960) was approximately where the post office building in pic 3 is..
The last Houston streetcar lines - before the current ones - stopped in 1940.

(4) Ran across this wood boxcar while in the Chicago area.

(5) This building in Rosenberg,Tx with the paint etc. always looked like an SP one even though it was away from the tracks (to the left).
In one of the antique stores in Houston I found a drawing of the SP trackwork in Rosenberg and it labeled this building as a pump house - I assume water for the steam engines.

One of the best sets of miscellaneous images I have seen. I especially like the photos where streetcar tracks once were.

Was the Houston Grand Central terminal torn down in 1960? Didn't it host Amtrak trains during the early 1970's?

The SP Grand Central was gone by 1960 (maybe '59 ?).
The current Amtrak station next to the now closed post office was built by SP after they tore down Grand Central.
Hard to believe that station has been there for 60 years !
Almost 35 years longer than Grand Central Station existed.

The SP Grand Central Station was torn down.  The Houston Union Station, hosted MP, ATSF, CRIP, FWD and Amtrak (May 71-July 30, 1974.)  SP's small replacement depot west of the majestic Grand Central Station became the default station for Amtrak, July 31, 1974.  Allegorically speaking, the poor Lone Star never really thrived there.  Terminating the Lone Star at the SP depot was the fatal blow to it and the decline in patronage and service quality was noticeable till its ultimate demise in October, 1979.
