Nice! I've always thought back-to-back SD45s presented great symmetry from just about any angle...

Why is the SP on it's way to Victorville? And what are they doing with only two units? And why are they clean?

SD40M-2 guts, SD45 body.
The date is post-merger, so former SP units were roaming the UP system (Victorville).
This is more of a local, and the MK-rebuilds handled these trains for many years after the merger.    Mojave and West Colton were a popular base.

Because this is a UP train of the former ATSF and not an SP train on the Palmdale Cutoff.

When the Palmdale Cutoff was built in the 1960 's. Phelan was a station listed in the SP timetable. At the time Phelan was just a station sign and there was not a siding. Since the Cutoff was dark territory regular trains were listed as leaving times for that listed station. Regular trains were westbound. Eastbound were extra trains. Dispatching was done by trainorders.
