Budd car SP-10 has just taken over train 246 wich for years was held down by P10 2486, my favorite pacific., all went well for a week and then SP-10 broke down near Selby and the 2-8-0 2747 was working the Union 76 turn at the time and in the second shot, 2747 has been assigned to take train 246 to Sacramento..the shot is at Martinez......

That's certainly nothing you see every day. Nice catch!

Must have broke pretty good to require a tow since RDC's had two seperate engines and power trucks.

The second shot has to be one of the most unusual SP photos I have ever seen.

E.K. Muller also caught SP's RDC being pulled by a steam locomotive in 1956:

As the only RDC on the roster, it probably suffered from inexperienced maintenance on top of any intrinsic weaknesses.  I've also heard that SP used the 10 to haul a baggage car from Sacramento as far as Davis on its westbound run, something Budd hadn't designed RDC's to do.  That probably didn't help the car's mechanical reliability.
