Switcher Saturday: Alco at the old Barn
Author: santafe199

Q: By visual inspection, which Santa Fe entity here has been through the roughest life span? This Alco S-2, or the 32-stall, steam era roundhouse behind it?

A: (short answer) Just say “Yes”…

1. AT&SF 2382 getting mechanical attention at the roundhouse in Emporia, KS in March of 1974.
Original Kodachrome slide by the late Lee Berglund, from the Daniel Archer collection.

Both were living on borrowed time, but the steam-era roundhouse would outlast the diesel.  The 2382 was retired in December 1975 and sold for scrap.  The roundhouse was demolished in the winter of 1983-84.

Well done. The roundhouse makes a great background.

NIce shot with the roundhouse in the background....I tried to get shots of it before it was torn down but you really needed an aerial view to do it justice.  I bet that would be quite a unit to model.

That is an excellent roster shot.

Speaking as a heavily weathered old unit myself, I would say the switcher looks better than the building itself.
