Surprised This Model on Roster and Newly Painted - 1987
Author: krm152

On Saturday, Jun 27, 1987, I stopped by the NS in Lawrenceburg KY to check out the power being used for the switcher assignment based there. No other location on the Louisviile - Danville Line had a switcher assignment. Was really surprised to find an EMD SW1 (#1002) and even more one in fresh paint holding down this asignment.
After having now done some research, I found that, amazingly, several SW1’s lasted on NS into the 1990’s. That was also a definite surprise.

#1002  was built 4/1947 as Chattanooga Traction Company #3.
So it was about 40 Years old when I took my photo.
It was about 50 years old when it was retired from the NS roster.

A nice catch ! I remember an SW-1 at Conway after the Conrail split, it was also in full NS paint. I passed it a lot getting my power out of East Park and did take a few photos. I don't believe it was active though.

The story here is that they had to use this LIGHT locomotive to haul cars across a spindly trestle. The trestle is no longer in service.

NS serviced the Venice Branch in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia until just a couple years ago. It was accessed across a spindly iron truss bridge over the Schuylkill River. NS kept a little critter like that at Abrams Yard to do the deed. The deed being delivering tank cars to a paper mill and boxcar loads out. The entire Venice Island is between the river and the old Schuylkill Canal. The area is highly gentrified with Condos and craft breweries now that all the industry and this interesting branch has been abandoned.

The trestle your're referring to is Young's High Bridge.
It was last used in late 1985, about a year and a half
befor I took the posted photo.
