Busy Days on the KP--Es & DDs . . .
Author: SCKP187

Taking a look back 52 years on this date from my Dad's conductor books.  Looks like he was on the Conductor's Extra Board at the time but there were plenty of trains to keep the time slips rolling in, even though Trainmaster John C. Kenefick in Salina KS hired 7 men on his seniority date and he was #6.

1.     Interesting times as passenger service was winding down, extra E units were being pressed into freight service --a neat ABBB consist for Trn #154 Salina to Junction City, the short east end only 47 miles before interdivisional agreements took place.
called for 215a--departed 320a--arrived Junction City 430a, set out 6 cars for the local and tie up 500a

2.     Then called 750a to go back west.  With a DD35A UP 79 and GP30B most likely this is a symbol KCLA train--arrive Salina 945a and tie up 1005a

3.     Later that night called to deadhead east to Junction City on #18 Portland Rose to protect the next morning's extra west

several more to follow . .

4.     Again with ABBB E unit consist the extra west running on Trn #155s schedule called for 840a--depart 910a and tie up in Salina 1030a.  Engineer T.J. Peterson was known as a hard and fast runner---47 miles in 50 minutes.

5.     Next day called 1230a with another ABBB set of Es and another quick 47 miles on #154 Salina to Junction City

6.     after a penalty time layover at away-from-home-terminal

more to follow . .

7.     KCLA train with DD35A and GP 30B units called 835p--depart 910p and arrive Salina 1000p

8.     The following day a KCLA train Salina to Ellis with DD35A UP 71-79B-97B, plenty of power to protect the service schedule and 4380 ton and relatively flat KP.

Thanks for looking back

These are really cool! Those were truly the days of variety on the UP. Thanks for sharing! Of course once again I hear the KP, after a brief revival, is wanting for traffic again.

Those were some short working territories. The good old days for sure.

At the away-from-home terminal, if not called for a train to return to home terminal after 14 hours they go on hours and minutes pay.
