Saluting roster shots (#4): Dingy Rock Island U-boat
Author: santafe199

Depending on who you talk to here’s a “roster” shot that kinda-sorta breaks a couple of rules. First, because it’s lashed up on both ends it becomes a nose-coupled roster. That’s a no-no which a lot of shooters would pass up. Especially ones who weren’t able to operate with a large budget. Also, the cab door is ajar, even though the photographer chose an angle that would best camouflage that fact. Plus, for some shooters there is way too much utility pole/wire distraction over the top. For the motor-drive equipped roster-shooter for commercial resale, this photo would probably be passed up. Unless it was a very rare engine, had a very rare paint scheme or fell into some other “must-shoot” category.

However, 40 years after the Mighty Fine Road went belly-up I’ll accept just about any Rock Island roster I can get ahold of! So all bets are off… ;^)

Those were labeled "PRS" shots, Perfect Roster Shots by the early foamers. I'll take it any day, can't get it today. Thanks for posting.

In 1974 I would have shot it.  Any locomotive was fair game.

Likewise here! But then I was never in the "shoot a whole roll on 1 perfect roster shot for commercial resale business". I much preferred to keep my shooting purely on a hobby-for-fun basis...

Nice shot, Lance!  Do you know what model that is?  Is it a GE U30B.

Thanks.

I like it. Many of the Rock Island singles I have are like this. This is part of the reality of railfanning. Keep on posting.

Should be a U33B. Has the wider rear radiators. U30B rear radiators about the same width as the car body.

Yes it is a U33B.  They also had U33B's in the 290 series.

It's a perfectly lit shot, the unit is hardly dingy especailly in light of the general condition of the Rock fleet!
