Nostalgia & History > Sunday Coal Service - C JRMMONDate: 06/28/20 11:13 Sunday Coal Service - C JRMMON Author: SPJoe A loaded Power River Basin Coal train (Jacobs Ranch Mine to Mossville Nelson Power Station) enters the BNSF spur to Nelson Power Station off the Sunset Route in Sulphur La in the late 90's. Don't have the date but, the sunrise arrival of this BNSF coal train was one of the first BNSF trains to use this track. Southern Pacific built the spur to compete with KCS which was using their own track to the North to supply the plant but, as far as I know, SP never used it. Post-merger, BNSF started running unit coal trains from Powder River to Mossville Nelson. BNSF 70MAC's are 2x2 with a consist of pure EGSX (Entergy Gulf States) rotary dump gons in between. Once off the BNSF main (Sunset Route) these trains were handled by another railroad (Timber Rock?) for unloading at the plant.
