Huron SD was once synonymous with C&NW Alco's and a magnet for for RR photgarphers. Here's a George Horna shot from June 10, 1972 that typifies why ... and even includes an Alco road slug.

Great photo!  The fourth unit is the C&NW's only RS36 no. 405.

I was a Conductor and Switchman/Footboard yardmaster in 1972 in Huron, I was going to school and working the 2nd truck switch engine most of the time but in the summer and weekend would be called as a conductor out of Huron. In August of 1972 married my wife Marie of 48 years now and with 51 years in the railroad industry not sure how she put up with it and the moves. That looks like it might be train 418 the Huron to Mankato train. It alos could have been an Extra to Sioux City down the Iroquois line but that usually only rated a couple of RS3's
CNW 1503 was my regular yard engine and RS2. I left Huron back to my east coast roots and the EL out of Hoboken in the early fall of 1973 after I had graduated .

Be safe out there
