Nostalgia & History > Some early Conrail action at Binghamton, NY

A random sampling of some early Conrail trains at the former Erie-Lackawanna hotspot.  Conrail had little to no use for the former Lackawanna side of things via Scranton, so almost all of the action was on the old Erie side. 

1.  Former PC GP38 7986 leads a former EL SD45 eastbound on the old Erie main in town.  PC GP38's could be found everywhere post merger.  

2.  Former CNJ GP7 1531 parked with some former PC units under the Chenango St. bridge.

3.  Former PRR C425 still carrying the Pennsy yellow numbers leads a former NYC U28B with the old NYC oval nose emblem and white frame stripe still visible and that CNJ GP7 pull off the D&H connecting track.  All three here from September 12, 1976.  Also of note is the lack of cloud cover, a rare sight for Binghamton.

4.  SD50 6727 leads an eastbound as it stops for a meet at C.P. "BD".

5.  Holding for the meet with OIBU.  Off to the right in the distance is a D&H train waiting for the CR trains to clear before heading east toward Albany.

6.  OIBU is moving west led by SD40 6522.  The former Lackawanna main is in the foreground.  All from May 12, 1984.

7.  The train I posted yesterday passing through Susquehanna, PA is now heading through Binghamton.  Note the vintage bus on the left.  I just missed catching it crossing the Starucca Viaduct. :(

8.  The train was TV-301 and has a pair of C&NW units plus a GP40 for power.

9. Heading into a nice azure sunset toward Buffalo.  All from November 12, 1988.

Bridge was Chenango Street.

Blue skies almost had me thinking these were photoshopped! LOL

Oops, I'll correct the name.  Here's a more typical grubby day shot for those uncomfortable with the blue skies. ;)   5/12/84.

The vintage bus was a permanent fixture as part of a now defunct restaurant.
