Joint ATSF-LASL Barstow-San Bernardino Line
Author: Northern

The ATSF built the Barstow to San Bernardino line and later, the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad gained trackage rights to use this line.  Did the LS&SL ever make an effort to build there own line parallel with the ATSF?  Was there a reason as to why both railroads split on to their own respective alignments between San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Long Beach?

UP has trackage rights from West Riverside to Daggett, CA.  LA&SL did make some surveys of their own route over Cajon Pass but decided that trackage rights over the Santa Fe was a better deal.
This is all covered in the book "The Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad Company" by John R. Signor which was published by Golden West Books.

First of all, that is an excellent book.  Second, Golden West Books just re-released the book with updated information (and better cover, artwork instead of a picture).  The book was first published in 1988 I think, so it was getting hard to find (at least at a decent price), so now is your chance to purchase this wonderful book.

Karen's Books has it on sale.  I bought a month or so ago and agree that it's an excellent book, as Signor's usually are.
