A question regarding CNJ's wreck cranes
Author: Pattenburg

In talking with a fireman friend about a 1969 Reading derailment that took place in Belle Mead, NJ, he mentioned about his fire company having to provide water from the company's tanker to a CNJ wreck crane. Does that sound correct as I am just curious about his comment. Thanks for any info.

If it was a steam powered crane I suppose it makes sense. Seems late though for a steam powered crane to still be operating.

Some cranes went to scrap in the 1970's with their steam boilers intact. A few examples were on the DRGW, WP, ATSF, SP.

Most of our cranes (NYC) were steam powered in the 1960s.

CNJ Steam Cranes #5 and #6 were both in service into the 70s. #5 is preserved at Steamtown in Scranton.
