Did the SP lease some MRL units at that time? If not, what would have brought a MRL unit onto a SP train down there? I don't recall ever seeing a MRL on the SP before.

I don't know the story with SP, as far as leasing goes but, I remember seeing MRL units more than this one time just, not often.
