Sacramento Northern F3A + WP F - A longer "Detour"
Author: E25

After looking at Alan Miller's great shot in Valmont's post below, I remembered that I caught the SN #301-D at the first light of a very hazy morning at Willbridge / Portland, OR in 1971.

Quite unusual power for a Seattle to Portland BN manifest inasmuch as the WP pooled units pretty much stayed with the #137 / #138 "Inside Gateway" trains.  A trailing SP&S ALCO RS-3 added a little more color to the consist.

To "valmont's" earlier post of the beautiful Sacramento Northern F3, I said:

Well, the pigs have just taken off and are in flight.
Just a really, special image. Thanks for remembering that you had it, and for sharing it. Unbelievable.

Definitely a super excellent and historic photo.
SN #301-D was ex-NYO&W #502.
Thanks for the great posting.

That was a real score to catch a SN F3A leading a train in Portland. Thanks for sharing your good fortune with us here.

Yes it is because it screams RAILROAD.  And the semaphores just make it better.

Truly a one in a million shot !
Ex NYO&W F-3 a long ways from the Catskill Mountains of New York State.

Any idea what month this was taken ?

That F-3 was not long for the world, retired May 1971?
Used by Western Pacific as trade in credit for WP 3537.

At least that is the info I have at hand.

They were so power short then holding WP units "hostage" up here happened a lot. But rarely in such a spectacular fashion as this! The most common scenario was the WP would want their power turned back at Klamath Falls. But due to the increase in Inside Gateway traffic and BN's overall power shortage those obligations could not be met if they wanted to keep the trains running. Which we all know the BN-WP very much did in those days.

Great photo!  Just goes to show that not every picture from the past has yet been seen by everyone.  So much out there in slide collections waiting to be scanned.

Thanks for all of the nice comments. 'Good to know that my memory isn't totally shot, yet.  LOL

Thanks also to TO for the one month extension to my subscription.

I first spotted that train in Vancouver, WA while it was waiting for the Columbia Drawbridge to close. That gave me time to run over to Willbridge to catch it in better light.
