Seeing valmont's post of the SN detour brought back memories of other shots I have of the units on the SN detour.  Thought I'd post a few.

1.  The going away shot of valmont's post    Stockton  10/1/67

2-3.  301D/301A arriving Stockton from S. Sacramento  5/31/69

A super outstanding Sacramento Northern F-Unit photo series.
SN #310-A = ex-NYO&W #501     SN #310-D = ex-NYO&W #502
Thanks for your great photo posting.

And street-running, too. Just incredible. When pigs fly....well, they're flying.

Awesome photos of some neat units.  I do not know why it interests me so much to see SN lettered F-units but it does very much.  Always get a kick out of seeing them.

And the caboose in a lot of those photos is SN 1642, which would become one of the two final cabooses in service on the SN.  It survives today at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum and is getting repainted to match its later running buddy, SN GP7 712.

Wish we could put together even an SN - WP pair like in the first photo.  Wouldn't that look sweet.

Interesting.  I have heard of and seen a few photo's of the SN, but never really knew anything about it although I assumed it was a subsiderary of the WP.  I looked at the wiki and was surprised it was a larger operationi that I would have guessed:

"The Sacramento Northern Railway (reporting mark SN) was a 183-mile (295 km) electric interurban railway that connected Chico in northern California with Oakland via the California capital, Sacramento. In its operation it ran directly on the streets of Oakland, Sacramento, Yuba City, Chico, and Woodland and ran interurban passenger service until 1941 and freight service into the 1960s."

After reading further, I didn't see what date that the SN because a sub of WP; I'll have to look again to see if I missed it.  It did say it ceased to existed when UP took over the WP in 1983.

Fantastic photos!

Cheers,
Jim

Thanks.  I wish they would restore all of those WP photo's of freight cars.  It was a great reference.
