Those are great. Have never seen these units sans lettering, thought it only happened on more recent new power.

In 1980 power was so short that the late 3700-3800 SD40-2s were put in service this way. Saw several out here in Pocatello.

Wow, interesting. I remember the EMDs running around like that for awhile. But I've never seen U-Boats running around unadorned.

At leas they got a basic paint scheme, unlike the NS units that ran around in primer until the FRA told them to paint 'em.  Thanks for posting.

For awhile in the 70's UP would have their new power painted by the builders but UP would apply the scotchlite striping and lettering.

The red lettering makes all the difference.

You don't really realize how simple the UP paint scheme is until you those "painted but unlettered" photos.

I take it unlettered locomotives could not be used on the point per FRA?

Never heard THAT. Please quote the FRA regulation stating that.
