Lehigh Valley mixed bag
Author: thebluecomet

1.  A quartet of lite units rolls west at Manville, NJ on a hot summer day in 1974.  The plant on the left is the old Johns-Manville asbestos manufacturing plant.  Today the site is an auto auction facility.  Visible in the distance are the home signals for the crossing of the Reading.  This trackage is now the NS main in Jersey.

2.  A set of big C628's in full Cornell red sit at the Bethlehem engine terminal.  March 30, 1975. Only the office building remains today and the site is used for MOW storage.

3.  The eastbound Apollo, LV's hottest train, has been routed via the old CNJ tracks this day and is seen passing through Lehigh Gap, PA.  The original LV main is across the river and the Lehigh and New England once crossed over top. April 20, 1975.  Today this is a single track NS line with the former LV across the river now a rail-trail.

Like them all.  Especially like photo 1; it definitely looks like a hot summer day.

Thanks for this Lehigh Gap, PA, image and background on the railroads that once bustled through this area.  Sad to hear the Lehigh Valley line was pulled up and it now a rail-trail.
