Pic 1: This was the scene at Winton Jct, WY on May 13, 1978. The train this quintet delivered to this remote location were ore hoppers from the USS mine at Atlantic City, WY. Here they were handed off to UP GE's and after heading south to the UP main line the train began it's westward journey to USS's Geneva operation in Utah. The date was May 13, 1978.

Pic 2 was a little earlier, after the UP power showed up to pick up the train. There were 2 of us on this trip, wonder he'll see this post ....

Very interesting that the UP C30-7 is in the 2900 number series. They were only in that series for about a year before they were renumbered into the 2400's.

Didn't the USS F's return to Atlantic City with the empties left by the UP?

That was a very cool operation... while it lasted.  Thanks for your post, Valmont.

Yes, a return with empties was the only way to get the F's back to the loadout for the next loaded train.

Desolate but beautiful landscape. Love that ridge in the background.
